Updating Plastic Outlet Covers & Switch Plates

Anyone following along with us remodeling our farmhouse, saw that I decided to try an idea I saved to my Pinterest...my one of many pins for this this house lol.

The original inspiration came from EHow.

Supplies needed for this project:
white plastic outlet covers ($5 for 10, Lowe's)
white plastic switch plate covers ($5 for 10, Lowe's)
Rust-Oleum Metallic spray paint ...I chose Oil Rubbed Bronze ($4.96 at WalMart)
Sand Paper (120 grit)

This project is so inexpensive and quick to do it's crazy.  I don't know about you, but I'm all about being budget friendly with this remodeling thing.

First, I sanded the shiny front of each cover with the sand paper to rough it up a little for the paint to stick better.  I gave them a thorough cleaning with alcohol to get the dust off.  ****it's very important to sand them or the paint will easily chip away at the slightest touch.****I apologize I did not get pictures of the sanding process, I will try to remember when we do another room.

After cleaning the covers and letting them dry, I grabbed an old card board box to lay the covers in.  I like to spray in a box to catch any of the overspray.  I also poked the screws that came with each cover through a small piece of cardboard so I wouldn't lose them...plus they needed painted as well.

My "Spray Booth"

Remember to shake the can before spraying to get an even color.  I keep my can at least 8 inches from the covers and use a sweeping motion.

I hit these with two coats to make sure everything was covered and going to look like they came this color.

Look how great they look on my newly painted Eggshell walls =>
(they got dusty during the floor sanding process...so I will be touching these up, sigh)

I hope this idea has inspired you the way it did me to inexpensively and quickly color up my outlet and switch plate covers.
